My IP Address Shows the Wrong Location. Why and How to Fix It
Sometimes your IP address shows the wrong city or even the wrong country. This does not always mean that something is broken, there are several common reasons.
1. How IP-based geolocation works
Websites use public IP-to-location databases. These databases map IP ranges to countries, regions and cities. They are not perfect and can be outdated or inaccurate.
2. Reasons why your IP location is wrong
- Your ISP registered the IP range in another city or region.
- The geolocation database is outdated or uses approximate data.
- You are behind NAT or CGNAT and share an IP with many users.
- You are using a VPN or proxy that terminates in another location.
3. How to check what websites really see
First, check your current IP and location using our tool: Check IP. Compare the results with other websites.
4. How to fix incorrect IP location
- Restart your router and get a new IP from your ISP.
- Ask your ISP to update their IP-to-location entries.
- Use a VPN with a server in the city/country you need.
